Stock market today: Oil gains while share prices fall after Israel strikes back at Hamas attack

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:14:35 GMT

BANGKOK (AP) — Crude oil prices surged and world share prices were mostly lower on Monday after the Israeli government declared war following deadly attacks by Hamas from the Gaza Strip. U.S. futures declined. The bond market in the U.S. will be closed Monday for the Columbus Day holiday, but the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be open. Oil prices were up more than $2 a barrel after gaining more than $3 earlier in the day. Conflict in the Middle East often pushes oil prices higher given the risk of disruptions to supplies. “Disruptions or escalations in the region can have far-reaching implications for energy markets, global supply chains, and geopolitical dynamics,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. The fighting has not yet had any discernible impact on oil output, but geopolitical escalations in the Middle East typically lead to a “buy-first-ask-questions-later” response, he said. Oil prices had eased back from highs of the mid $90 range last month...

France ambassador for LGBTQ+ rights: Canada, Quebec can counter Russia-led regression

OTTAWA — France’s ambassador for LGBTQ+ rights says Russia is helping sow a global backlash against gender and sexual minorities, and argues francophone countries should work together to counter growing polarization. “LGBT subjects are among the most confrontational, the most inflammable, in international relations,” Jean-Marc Berthon said in a French-language interview during his recent visit to Canada.Berthon also said he was taken aback by Canadian anti-LGBTQ+ protests he witnessed during a visit in late September.Nearly a year ago, the government of French President Emmanuel Macron named Berthon as an ambassador tasked with advancing LGBTQ+ rights, both through public advocacy and work within France’s diplomatic and civil service.“The mere fact of having an ambassador for the rights of LGBT people means that the machine is put to work on these issues,” he said.Berthon advises France’s embassies on how to support local LGBTQ+ advocacy gro...

Let me start my saying, I love my parents, but they weren’t always the best role models when I was growing up. They were always scraping by, late on the rent, and when they did have money, they wasted it on stupid stuff instead of saving. So, when I was out on my own, I vowed to never let that happen to me. Now at the age of 38, I’m a relentless saver and keep my finances tight. My parents know this and are just as careless now as they ever were. I lent them money last year to make their mortgage and now they’re asking me to help them again. Only this time I’ve told them no. Now they’re mad at me, but I don’t think that’s fair. I want to help them, but I can’t let their mistakes become my mistakes. How can I get them to understand that I can’t help them, ...

Dear Amy: I was with my boyfriend for four years. We lived together the entire time.He was my soul mate and stepped in to be the dad in my kids’ lives (I have three children from my previous marriage).I thought everything was amazing and that he was my partner in life.He died two weeks ago. Because we weren’t married, I couldn’t be the person to make the arrangements. SANTA CLARA – Here is how the 49ers (5-0) graded in Sunday night’s 42-10 home win over the Dallas Cowboys (3-2):PASS OFFENSE: ABrock Purdy (four touchdown passes) and George Kittle (three touchdown catches) set career highs, and their most picturesque connection came on a play called: “Toss 18 Flea Flick.” That football touched the hands of Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, then went back to Purdy, who didn’t flinch at an incoming defender and launched a pass from midfield to Kittle for a 38-yard touchdown reception and a 14-0 lead. That play was installed midway through last season (before Purdy ascended to the QB throne), and although it was called amid the carnage of the NFC Championship Game for McCaffrey (after Purdy’s injury), it wasn’t fully executed until this game, after they practiced it Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.Kittle commended Purdy for how well prepared he is with the 100 passes and 50 runs they must sift through each week, adding: “Brock’s pocket aware...
