OAKLAND — Multiple people have been arrested in connection with the Friday slaying of Officer Tuan Le, the city’s police department announced Tuesday morning.None of the suspects have been identified by police, who say that one of the arrestees was brought into custody within the past 12 hours. The Santa Rita Jail intake log shows multiple people arrested on burglary and robbery charges within the past day, but no one facing murder charges.A brief news release calls the arrests a small step forward in a “lengthy legal process” and that police are still working “tirelessly to bring justice to the Le family.”Le, 36, was shot and killed near the city’s waterfront on the 400 block of Embarcadero around 4:30 a.m. Friday while working a plainclothes burglary suppression detail. Police said officers first responded to a burglary call at a cannabis business on Embarcadero around 1 a.m. Friday and left after taking a report and securing the area.Hour...Sierra Nevada snowpack at lowest level in 10 years: What it means for California’s water supply

California’s statewide Sierra Nevada snowpack — the source of nearly one-third of the state’s water supply — is at its lowest level in a decade, a major turnaround from last year when huge storms ended a three year-drought and buried ski resorts in massive amounts of snow.On Tuesday, the snowpack was just 25% of its historical average for Jan. 2. The last time there was less snow at the beginning of a new year was on Jan. 2, 2014, when it stood at just 19%.The lack of snow so far this year is due to fewer big storms hitting the state than normal, and when storms have come, they have been warmer, depositing snow mostly at higher elevations. But the meager totals so far across California’s pre-eminent mountain range are not a cause to panic, experts say.Not only are there three months left in the winter season, which typically ends in early April, but last year’s soaking winter filled reservoirs across the state. That “money in the bank” means chances are ...Cold snap send temps in Finland, Sweden to below minus 40

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday appealed a ruling by Maine’s Democratic secretary of state barring him from the ballot over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was expected to also ask the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on his eligibility to return to the presidency in a related Colorado case. The Republican candidate appealed the Maine decision by Shenna Bellows, who became the first secretary of state in history to bar someone from running for the presidency under the rarely used Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That provision prohibits those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office.Trump’s appeal to the Maine Supreme Court declares that Bellows had no jurisdiction in the matter and asks that she be required to place Trump on the March 5 primary ballot. The appeal argues that she abused her discretion and relied on “untrustworthy evidence.”“The secretary should have recused herself due to her bias against President Trump...Latest news
